We are delighted to share that we are now B Corp Certified™. We now join a growing global community of over 7,800 purpose-led organisations, using business as a force for good.

What is B Corp?

Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies verified by B Lab to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability balanced with profitability.

B Corps are redefining what success looks like in business —modelling the kind of organisations we need to create an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economic system. Every new B Corp demonstrates that businesses thrive when they act for people and the planet.

Legal Trailblazers

As the first law firm in the North East and Cumbria to achieve this accreditation, we are leading the charge in ethical and sustainable business practices within our region and it forms the next part of our ESG strategy and continuous improvement.

Senior Partner and head of the ESG Programme at Muckle, Hugh Welch, said: “Being a responsible business and caring for the wider North East community has been at the heart of our business for the last two decades. Achieving B Corp Certification™ is a wonderful endorsement of all that we are doing. It will also be the catalyst for us to increase our community contribution and to show how we believe that business can and should be a force for good.”

B Corp brands

The UK B Corp movement has gained considerable momentum in recent years, with over 1,500 certified companies and 7,800 globally showcasing a diverse array of industries and household names. Muckle joins a network of well-known brands like The Guardian, innocent drinks, The Body Shop and Patagonia to trailblazing businesses such as GiffGaff and Too Good To Go. Regional B Corps include Robson Laidler Accountants, Scott Logic, Just Williams, Sail Creative, UMi, Berghaus and Space Architecture.

Recent attention on the legal industry makes our B Corp certification a notable step and signals a shift towards greater accountability and transparency in the sector.

Paving the way

Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK, said, “We are delighted to welcome Muckle LLP to the B Corp community. This is a movement of companies who are committed to changing how business operates and believe business really can be a force for good. We know that Muckle is going to be a fantastic addition to the community and will continue driving the conversation forward”.

“We are pleased to have B Corps of all shapes and sizes as part of our community – from startups to multinationals and across many different industries. Business is a powerful force and B Corps demonstrates that you can do good in any sector. Welcoming Muckle is an exciting moment because they have an opportunity to lead the way within the legal industry [in the North East and Cumbria]. We and the rest of the B Corp community are really pleased to support Muckle in paving the way for a new way of doing things”.

“Being able to welcome Muckle to the B Corp community is hugely exciting. Their commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to others and really help spread the idea that we can redefine success in business to be as much about people and planet as it is about profit”.

B-ing a force for good

"We are thrilled to pioneer this significant milestone as the first law firm in our region to attain B Corp certification," said Managing Partner Jason Wainwright "This achievement reaffirms our dedication to not only delivering exceptional legal services but also actively contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future for our community and beyond."

Our commitment to becoming a B Corp aligns seamlessly with our long-standing values of trust, teamwork, responsibility and care and builds on its recent double award win at the North East Business Awards for Company of the Year and Best Place to Work 2023. By achieving this certification, our firm not only underscores its dedication to legal excellence but also sets a benchmark for ethical leadership in the legal sector throughout North East and Cumbria.

"As a firm deeply rooted in our local community, we recognise the importance of using our platform to drive positive change," added Wainright. "Becoming a B Corp is a natural progression in our journey toward a more sustainable and responsible legal practice, and we are excited about the possibilities it brings."
