Big plans for new North East solar farm

Lightsource BP have announced plans to develop a major solar farm in the North East. 250 acres of

land at Cowley House Farm, Thorpe Larches near Sedgefield in County Durham, is earmarked for the project.

The proposal is to build a 49.9MW capacity solar farm on the site, enough to power 13,000 homes

saving over 16,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. The developers say their solar farms ‘are

designed so that they also act as a haven for local wildlife’.

In this case they also say a biodiversity management plan will be devised alongside the planning

application so that the development ‘enhances the site as much as possible for local wildlife, and

that native species benefit from planting, seeding and habitat creation’. The layout of the

development at the Thorpe Larches site will also mean that open grassland is left available for

agricultural purposes.
