Much of Hugh’s 30 years as a corporate lawyer in the private and public company sectors has been spent working with a variety of charitable organisations. That involvement has largely been in relation to corporate, constitutional and governance issues. However, he also has an abiding interest in the development of philanthropy in the UK, and as such has assisted charities in their fund-raising and development activities.
Because he cares passionately about the North East, Hugh has always wanted to see Muckle make a really positive contribution to the broader community in the region. So he has therefore led and co-ordinated the community and pro bono work which we undertake as part of our commitment to supporting that wider community. He has also been chairman of the Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland (which is one of the region’s largest charities) and he is currently chairman of the Archbishop of York’s Youth Trust, as well as being a trustee of several other charitable organisations.
Hugh says it is has been his faith and his wife’s unwavering support that has inspired him to do so much over the past 30 years. But as if all of those commitments weren’t enough to have kept him occupied, Hugh also loves gardening, fast cars and running marathons. Lots of marathons. And to date you could have spotted him pounding the streets of cities such as Dubai, Rome and Dublin and, bizarrely, around the shores of Loch Ness.
