New coal for Cumbria

15th May 2019 | Energy

The North West should see a new deep coal mine developed to extract metallurgical coal after Cumbria County Council granted planning approval to West Cumbria Mining for the project known as Woodhouse Colliery in Whitehaven.

The developers are expecting to extract around 2.5 million tonnes of coal per year to supply UK and European steel making plant that currently import around 45 million tonnes per year from suppliers in the US, Canada, Russia and Australia.

Site work for the project is expected to start during 2019 and production will begin around two years after the start of construction.
