Green light for North Tyneside Energy from Waste project

28th Apr 2017 | Energy

The Howdon Energy from Waste project, planned for Howdon Yard in North Tyneside, has gained permission from North Tyneside Council’s planning committee.

The permission for the project, developed by Port of Tyne, arrived in a close vote with six for and five against. This was despite a number of objections from local residents and a petition against the scheme, while there were 20 letters of support.

The 25MWe waste gasification scheme could create around 1,000 jobs during construction and around 70 jobs when operational, with 100 apprenticeships to be offered.

Objectors raised concerns about the possible impact on health, residential amenity, noise and traffic congestion, along with the potential odours coming from the site.
