Government says solar PV energy will be central to renewables growth

22nd Oct 2013 | Energy

Energy Minister, Greg Barker has published a roadmap for solar PV and announced that DECC will publish a full solar PV strategy in the Spring of 2014. He said: “The Coalition is committed to that the country needs, at the lowest possible cost to consumers.

“Solar PV can play a central role in delivering the clean and reliable energy supplies. It’s a genuinely exciting energy technology which has already seen rapid growth and enjoys strong public support. I want this growth to continue but new solar installations must be sensitive to public opinion and mindful of wider environmental and visual impacts.”

The roadmap entitled ‘Roadmap to a Brighter Future’ sets an ambition of reaching 20GW of installed solar PV capacity in the UK within a decade. The capacity figure for June 2013 was 2.4GW. The document sets out some key principles for the further development of solar PV, the direction the supply chain is headed and the likely development of support routes as the Electricity Market Reforms come in to play.
