Fallon’s focus on North East renewables

28th Mar 2018 | Energy

Former Darlington MP and Government Minister, Fallon, is heading up a push to help regional companies gain a greater presence in the wind energy market. Sir Michael is working with Teesside based Wilton Engineering Services Ltd on a report into the effect of the government’s policy towards local content in the domestic wind energy sector.

What will the report assess?

Wilton Engineering Services Ltd has previously won work for Orsted’s Hornsea Project One offshore wind project, while many regional firms are active in the wider wind energy sector. The report will look at contracting arrangements, the business supply chain and government support for the wind energy sector. The report will also examine activities that could lead to the domestic wind energy sector reaching a 2020 target of sourcing 50% of its work from Britain.

Fallon said: “The offshore wind industry is growing quickly and with £11.5bn of investment in new UK offshore wind farms in the pipeline, it is vital that local content is fully incorporated into the supply chain. My report aims to consider best practice and assess any obstacles that need to be overcome.”

Energy expert view

“An examination of how local suppliers are supported in the development of domestic wind energy projects is welcome and hopefully will come up with practical suggestions that can influence government policy and support measures. We have a strong regional capability in the sector but actions that can help increase the proportion of work supplied by local businesses to wind energy projects will be very welcome.”
