Grassroots football club boosts impressive growth with new governance structure
A North East football club has accelerated its growth ambitions with support from Muckle LLP.
Heaton Stannington AFC has consolidated an impressive period of sustained growth resulting in its decision to transition to a new corporate structure.
The new structure is designed to boost the club’s continued success which has seen it rise up the football pyramid, securing promotion to Step 4 of the National League System. It has also welcomed record numbers of fans to games, made significant investment into the grounds, and now has one of the largest junior programmes in the area.
This impressive growth, success and continued ambition meant the club’s reassessment of its corporate structure was a natural next step. It provides the club with a robust legal framework to professionalise operations moving forward.
A club rooted in community
Heaton Stannington AFC has an impressive history stretching right back to 1910. Originally set up as a social club team, it has grown year on year to reach its current heights, with the first team finishing at a record seventh place in the PitchingIn Northern Premier League East Division during the 2025/26 season.
As well as drawing ever larger crowds to its games, the club has invested more than £250,000 into its ground at The Willow Park through support from the Premier League Stadium Fund and expanded its volunteer base to more than 100 people. The Club’s Reserves senior side have won successive promotions to find themselves in the Northern Alliance Premier Division. Its thriving junior division also comprises 41 teams, more than 500 players, and 85 FA-qualified coaches.
Scott Lyndon, Co-Chair and Club Secretary, said:
‘This is a significant milestone in the club's history. While promotion and cup finals naturally attract attention, ensuring the club has a modern and sustainable governance structure is equally important for our long-term future.
‘Having grown significantly in recent years, we outgrew the unincorporated model that had served the club for more than a century. This new structure provides a scalable framework that will help ensure Heaton Stannington remains sustainable and community-focused for generations to come.’
Club incorporation
The club called on the team at Muckle LLP to support with the incorporation. Led by Partner and Head of Sports, Alison Jones, and supported by solicitor Carla Boaks, and solicitor Eaden Hardcastle, the team worked to formalise and update the governance of the club and set it on a more professional footing for the future.
Alison said: ‘We were delighted to help Heaton Stannington as they embark on this exciting new chapter. It is always great to see community-led clubs like this one thriving and we were only too delighted to play a small part in ensuring its ongoing success. We have a strong community ethos at Muckle, working hard to balance profit with purpose so this felt like a great fit for us, and we wish the club every success as it continues to develop.’
The club’s transition to its new corporate structure was also supported by accounting firm, Azets.
The inaugural board of directors comprises existing club committee members Scott Lyndon (Co-Chair and Secretary), Neil Drummond (Co-Chair), George Clark (Treasurer), and Kevin Mochrie, alongside newly appointed directors Craig Swinhoe and Lee Massingham.
Craig Swinhoe, a highly experienced business executive and qualified solicitor played a key role in the club's junior section and brings experience in corporate governance and strategic planning to the new board. Lee Massingham contributes more than 30 years of senior finance and commercial leadership experience.
Commenting on his appointment, Craig Swinhoe said:
‘Having lived in the NE7 area for more than 20 years, I have a long-standing connection to the club and the community it serves. My aim is to help ensure the club continues to grow sustainably while remaining at the heart of local life.’
As part of the new structure, a number of custodian trustees have been appointed to safeguard the club's long-term interests and provide additional protection over the future of the Club.
Despite the legal transition, the club will continue to put the interests of its members- at the heart of everything it does and will remain volunteer-run and self-funded. An army of more than 100 volunteers continue to support operations across matchdays, youth football and community activities, something which the club is very proud of.
