Net zero plans speed up

Following on from the UK becoming the first major economy to bring in a ‘net zero’ target for 2050, more measures aimed at reducing emissions have been announced.

Part of the government’s response to recommendations from the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), the measures aim to set minimum energy efficiency standards which could help businesses save around £1bn per year on energy bills by 2030.

What measures are being proposed?

A consultation is being held on how best to improve the energy performance of non-domestic private rented buildings.

It is proposed that all non-domestic privately rented buildings achieve a minimum energy efficiency standard of EPC B by 1 April 2030 (provided the measures required are cost effective). Alternatively, plan B would set the target at achieving an EPC C standard by 1 April 2030, again if cost effective.

The government is also due to consult in 2020 on introducing mandatory in-use energy performance ratings for business buildings, to help businesses understand and manage their energy use. Plans for transport decarbonisation are also due to be complete next year, aimed at significantly reducing emissions across all modes of transport with a focus on technology and innovation.

There is also a further consultation currently underway on proposals aimed at simplifying the planning permission process for large-scale energy storage facilities in England and Wales.
