Previous Trainees

Jennifer Hirst

Senior Associate

It was while she was studying law at Edinburgh University, and then completing the CPE and LPC at Northumbria University, that Muckle became firmly established on Jennifer’s radar. The firm, she says, really stood out to her because of its friendly atmosphere, the quality of the work it was carrying out and the commitment it had to supporting and developing its solicitors. She joined us as a Trainee in 2004.

During her time as a Trainee Jennifer gained valuable, hands-on experience of working within the firm’s different legal teams and spent the final six months of her training contract in the Corporate Team. The work she was involved with there really appealed to her and she particularly enjoyed being part of a close team focusing on company acquisition and disposals.  And having identified Corporate Finance as the area of law she wanted to practice, we were delighted to offer Jennifer a position there once she had finally qualified.

Having been with the team for a number of years now, she has developed strong relationships with clients who come to her for a wide range of company law advice. The same can also be said for the variety of people within the firm, particularly in real estate, banking and employment, that Jennifer has the opportunity to work with when dealing with sales or acquisitions.

Through the work he does assisting our Charities Team, Jennifer has found there are lots of similarities between company law and charity law, particularly when it comes to advising trustees of the different structures available on incorporation. Trustees are certainly finding they need to operate their charities as businesses these days as it’s the best way to grow and attract funding, and Jennifer has already been involved with the purchase of a pub by a local community which had come together to form a co-operative.

Like everyone else who has qualified at Muckle, Jennifer benefits from the firm’s commitment to carry on training its solicitors following qualification. As she does from the broad training programme we operate here which encourages everyone, from Trainees right through to Partners, to develop their skills and keep updated on the latest developments in their area of expertise.

Although she feels right at home in her job at the firm, Jennifer still gets the urge to go back to Aberdeen every six weeks or so to visit her family and friends and see the Highlands again. In between, she loves being outside and runs at least twice a week, as well as taking regular walking trips to the Lake District and Northumberland where she has already completed the Allendale Challenge – a 26-mile hike in just one day.

Without doubt, though her favourite sport is skiing and she travels across to France twice a year for skiing holidays with her family.
