Being the salty sea dog type, Jonathan has over 20 years’ experience as a specialist maritime lawyer and also draws upon the invaluable knowledge he gained as a navigating officer with the Royal Navy.
These days, his particular fields of interest include contracting in the maritime sector, ports and port management and large yacht legal issues. He has extensive experience with many of the BIMCO standard form shipping contracts and their rider clauses, as well as in related London arbitration matters.
As a firm believer in using legal services to prevent problems and disputes arising in the first place, Jonathan advocates plain English drafting in contracts and related guarantees. He acts as course director for the Lloyd’s Maritime Academy on ship building, repair and sale and purchase courses, and can often be found speaking on his specialist subjects to audiences both at home and abroad.
A practising notary public, Jonathan also attests documents for use overseas in international transactions and arranges legalisation at the FCO and, if needed, consulates in London.
As you might imagine, Jonathan’s love of the sea isn’t confined just to his work, and as a keen sailor he holds a prestigious Yachtmaster Offshore certificate. However, there are some weekends when his family does manage to persuade him to stay ashore, and on such occasions they can all be spotted enjoying walks with their dogs in the Northumbrian hills – no doubt with excellent views to the coast.
