Training Contract

You will generally spend six months in four different practice areas. These include corporate finance, commercial, property development or corporate real estate, employment, dispute resolution, banking and construction. From time to time seats are also available in some of our smaller specialist teams and there may be the opportunity to revisit a particular practice area. In addition to your seats, your professional skills course is organised by us and you will receive plenty of legal and non-legal training.

Our trainees get high quality work and you will speak to clients and give advice almost from day one. Trainees are given as much responsibility as they can show they can handle. At the same time, you are not thrown in at the deep end. Continuous coaching and support is offered from all partners, associates and team members. As well as the supervising team members in the seats you are training in, there is also a trainee mentor whose responsibility it is to look after you during your contract.

Your training contract starts with a detailed introduction programme. You will get to know the firm and understand in more detail how we operate as a business. This includes training on our IT and document management systems, finance, billing, business development and other office systems and procedures.

Before you start

We will keep in touch before you join us and you will be invited to various firm social events. This is a great way for future trainees to meet everyone before they start. Also you will have a "friendly" mentor who you will meet for regular catch ups and who is responsible for letting you know what is happening at the firm.

After you join there are plenty of activities that take place in addition to working hard to become the best lawyer that you possibly can. This may range from organised events through our engagement team or more impromptu nights out. Newcastle is a lively and fun city with many excellent bars, restaurants, music and arts venues. There is no shortage of places to go. There are also many sporting teams and charitable activities for you to get involved in.

We invest heavily in our recruitment process. Having a relatively small intake each year means we can concentrate on giving you high quality training. Our aim is to turn our trainees into high quality commercial business advisers.
