In the hot seat …

How would you describe your team?
Top-notch.  In Chambers & Partners 2008 the team was ranked in the highest band of leading firms for dispute resolution in the North East.  This is a significant endorsement of the teams capability and reflects the quality of the work that we are habitually involved with.

Why did you become a lawyer?
When I left school I did not really know what I wanted to do.  I was more interested in playing rugby than a career.  I spent a bit of time travelling around the United States and playing rugby in New Zealand.  When it was time get a "real job" law seemed to tick a number of boxes.  I really enjoyed my degree and I have never regretted the career path taken.

Why did you choose to work at Muckle LLP?
Why I moved here is not as important as why, after five years, I have chosen to continue to remain here.  Muckle is an honest place.  You have a group of people working very hard to deliver the best possible service they can for their clients.

What has been the most challenging legal deal you have been involved in?
I was part of the legal team appointed to gather evidence for the Harold Shipman inquiry.  I also spent time in Northern Ireland working on the Bloody Sunday inquiry.  On the commercial side I have been fortunate enough to be involved in a significant number of high profile cases.  The subject matter has included significant fraud and asset recovery, breach of fiduciary duty, professional negligence, shareholder and high value contract disputes.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Assisting clients to achieve their objectives.

Who or what makes you laugh?
My kids, the Viz when it was funny, my own jokes, Theres Something About Mary, Meet the Fockers; that sort of thing.

What is the last CD you bought?
Let Go or Lets Go – Avril Lavigne.

Is there anything you would change about yourself?
How long have you got.  I would like Sampras's serve, Tiger Wood's approach shots, Usain Bolt's speed, etc.

Are you a morning or evening person?
I like to get a start on the day.  Life's too short for lying in bed (unless I am completely knackered).

What do you most enjoy about living in the North East?
I made a conscious decision to stay in Newcastle when I finished at University despite having opportunities to move to Leeds and London.  At the time it was a familiarity with the Bigg Market and Quayside.  Now for me and the family it is the mix I am looking for in terms of pace of life, size of city, job satisfaction and access to coast, countryside and Scotland.

Which four famous people dead or alive would you most like to take to dinner?
There are some people I would like to take to dinner, but I am not sure that my wife Rachel would be very pleased so I'd best not provide names!
