HSE publishes case studies on computer-related health issues - 09/09/2008

Surveys have found that high proportions of DSE workers report aches, pains or eye discomfort, and these problems can be avoided by following good practice. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published some case studies, in support of the rules governing employers' responsibilities, that are applicable across all industries:

  • reducing musculoskeletal disorders (eg low back pain and repetitive strain injuries) in keyboard users;
  • computer use in a news media organisation; and
  • upper limb disorders in an office environment.

The HSE has also updated its guidance on noise at work, to reflect the fact that the Control of Noise at Work Regulations now apply to the music and entertainment sectors, defined as all workplaces where live or recorded music is played in a restaurant, bar, disco or nightclub. Measures of particular relevance to these sectors, but with general application to employers in all sectors, are detailed on the new Sound Advice website, prepared by the HSE in collaboration with representatives of the music and entertainment industries and Environmental Health Officers.
