Environmental and sustainability

No responsible business can ignore its environmental impact.

Last year we set up a focus group called ’Always think green’, with the aim of improving our energy efficiency, reducing waste and generally making our firm a greener place to be!

The group started off by raising awareness of our current position through a series of quizzes and educational activities. We then identified areas where we felt improvements could be made to reduce our impact on the environment.

Saving the planet, one step at a time

We now recycle all our paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, printer cartridges and electrical waste.

We are registered with the Environment Agency with regard to hazardous waste and use only approved agencies in order to dispose of our electrical waste; this includes computer monitors, fluorescent light tubes and any electrical equipment containing hazardous components.

This ensures compliance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and prevents this type of material from going into landfill or incinerations without prior treatment which is a process of re-use, recover and recycle.

Making informed choices

Environmental impact is also an important consideration when using external suppliers. Sustainable manufacturing methods and end-of-life recycling was one of the criteria when purchasing furniture for our new premises.

We’ve been putting in place a number of green initiatives looking at, for example, saving energy (through switching off our PCs and appliances) and reducing the amount of paper that we use.

We ran a very successful initiative called ‘Think before you print’, where we asked our people to consider the environment before printing and, if necessary, to print double-sided; within the first month we saved 130,000 sheets of paper!

We’re also trying to minimise the use of paper/plastic cups in our vending machines. To do this, we’ll be giving all our people their own china cup and water glass to use in the office.
